7 Pillars of Player Development

What does every soccer parent and player want?

To get more playing time, to be a starter, to play at the highest league level and play for the best teams to get college scholarships or a professional contract.

There are finite number of spots available however. There are 205 NCAA D1 men’s and 333 women’s colleges in the US currently. D2 collgee, the numbers are 202 and 248 respectively. That means there are approximately 4200 spots across the US for men’s and approximately 11000 spots for women’s in D1 and D2 combined across the 4 years of college.  Each team  can give 10 and 14 scholarships respectively per year. So approximately we have 4100 scholarships for men (not full scholarships necessarily) and 5800 on women’s side each year, which includes freshmen to seniors.

As for professionals, for each positions, there are approximately 2000 spots available in top leagues in the world. Now consider the number of players globally fighting for these spots and the number of high school and college soccer players all over US alone, you will see how the odds are against achieving these goals and dreams.

Does it mean that it can not happen? Well, if you have a plan, if you have a goal, have the focus, know how and a plan, then your odds look much better! This is how we have been able to place over 32 players over the last 2 years in D1 and D2 colleges with scholarships, 18 players placed in professional academies and 12 professional contracts. This is only by working with thr parents and players to give them the knowledge they need to be able to take charge of their soccer life and destiny.

Pivot is the ultimate soccer development tool for parents and players. It’s like having a secret weapon in your soccer arsenal.

For players under 16, we highly recommend parents and players embarking on this journey together. Not only will it bring you closer, but it will also provide that extra X factor to propel you further ahead.

Let’s begin with pillar 1: Technical Development. This stage is fundamental in soccer development and is often showcased on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. You’ll find videos teaching shooting techniques, moves, tricks, and juggles, some of which may not be directly game-related. It’s important to understand that technical development focuses on honing skills. The distinction between technique and skill lies in the ability of skillful players to instinctively apply their technical abilities in the right situations. Certain skills are essential for specific positions, while others may be unnecessary and time-consuming.

Next up is pillar 2: Physical Development. This stage focuses on enhancing players’ speed, strength, and agility. It’s crucial to understand that the speed and agility training for a soccer player differs significantly from that of a track and field athlete. Therefore, these training methods must be tailored to soccer-specific requirements and, at advanced levels, to the specific positions players play.

Let’s discuss pillar number 3: Individual Tactical Development. This aspect is the core of soccer development and is often referred to as the “speed of the game.” It is crucial for aspiring professional players. We focus on cultivating the 82 essential soccer habits that players must not only understand but also execute on the field effortlessly. These habits include knowing which foot to dribble past a defender, recognizing the 5 superiorities, deciding when to pass with the inside or outside foot, and understanding when to pass or dribble, among others. Without ingraining these 80 habits into instinct, it is impossible for a player, regardless of their skill and speed, to succeed as a professional player.

Let’s now delve into pillar 4: Game Tactical Understanding. Game tactics are specific to each coach, as they have their own strategic plans. However, there are general principles of overall game tactical understanding that, when mastered, enable players to adapt and better implement their coach’s instructions. Game tactical understanding encompasses the team’s style of play, formation, and game idea. For players, it involves comprehending these principles and game tactics to a degree where they can be coachable, adaptable, and capable of delivering the desired results. This proficiency can lead to more playing time, a consistent starting position, and progression up the soccer development ladder.

Now, pillar number 5: Diet, Nutrition, and Commitment: It is crucial for parents to understand the significance of specific foods and timing in their children’s diet. Knowing what to eat before a match, after a match, and on a daily basis is essential. The dedication of both parents and players to surpass the efforts of others is key to success.

Let’s explore pillar number 6: Mental Mastery. This is the key to ultimate success, as it ties everything together. Mental Mastery involves mastering the ability to enter the zone effortlessly whenever needed. It addresses issues such as inconsistency and freezing that many players encounter. We equip players and parents with tools to harness empowering language, assign empowering meanings to stimuli and situations, handle challenging coaches, and cultivate leadership qualities both on and off the field. The program focuses on adopting the Mamba Mentality, shifting from a win-lose mindset to a no-failure approach, and understanding the athlete’s mindset, goals, motivations, and de-motivations. These tools are not limited to the pitch but can be applied to various aspects of life.

Lastly, we come to pillar number 7, the lucky number 7! This pillar revolves around the concept of being in the right place at the right time. At Pivot, we instill in players the idea that luck is not simply chance but something that they create. “We are not creatures of circumstance; we are creators of circumstance.” By mastering one’s mindset and utilizing our Professional Match Analysis service, which involves collaboration with top soccer analysts from prestigious European national teams, clubs, academies, and individual players, we focus on player development and understanding the right concepts on the field rather than just execution. Our goal is to introduce players who are prepared to coaches and clubs that are the perfect match for their skills and attributes. Player placement is akin to a dating process, where the aim is to match the player with a coach who recognizes and values their specific qualities.

See, these are the 7 fundamentals that we believe that your player needs to master in order to succeed. And it takes a lot of work… if it was easy… anyone could do it.
