Becoming a professional soccer player is a personal journey, and everyone has their own reasons for pursuing it. It’s crucial to approach this decision with care. Not all professional players achieve fame or fortune like Cristiano Ronaldo. Some earn very little or have relatively short careers (We explore these realities in our Mental Mastery program to better prepare players for success.) some professional players only make $50 per game or per goal. Others earn just $1500 per month. And even more disheartening, the average player’s career lasts only 1-8 years. Now, let’s explore the harsh truth of the opportunities available for aspiring players. The chances of moving up in the ranks are slim, and it’s more common to see players move down from Europe to lower leagues than the other way around. While there is a slight possibility of success, the odds are stacked against us.
In professional clubs, individual players are expendable; they are treated as mere cogs in a machine. The clubs throw in players, and only those who can swim survive another year. The rest are discarded and replaced with new players through their extensive scouting network. If these clubs are so great at developing players, why do they constantly need to bring in new talent? It’s clear that they don’t truly care about the players’ success.
The key to overcoming this flawed system is to align yourself with a team of experts who can impart their knowledge onto you. By doing so, players and parents can focus on developing the necessary skills to succeed in their soccer journey. Too often, players and parents leave coach reviews feeling lost and confused, without any clear guidance on what they need to improve. Yearly or quarterly assessments are insufficient; coaching should involve daily adjustments, personalized training, and specific homework assignments to foster continuous development. Unfortunately, many coaches follow the outdated tradition of meaningless assessments.
